Beat the Heat!

image16

Say no to oily/fried/junk food!

Summers have set in and along with it brought in an  array of lifestyle changes you need to adhere to. Rising body heat can  make you feel irritated, exhausted and make it difficult for you to  concentrate in daily activities. 😫
Drinking plenty of water 💧is  crucial but it might not be enough to maintain health under the  scorching sun☀️, you need to change certain things in your diet to beat  the heat the right way!
The body takes longer to digest in summers so  oily fried foods are a BIG NO, as it will lead to indigestion and  increase body heat🌞 and will show up on your face as pimples & acne.

image17

Try real fruit popsicle/frozen yogurt this summer!

🌞Summer season is Ice cream season!
But have you wondered🤔, why do you feel so thirsty after eating an Ice- cream?
It  is because Ice-cream dehydrates your body, it’s a temporary cooling  effect that you feel after eating an Ice-cream but internally it’s  dehydrating.
Most of them are made of high fructose corn syrup,  simple sugars that temporarily spike your energy but ultimately make you  hungrier.
This SUMMER season try a "REAL FRUIT 🍈🍎🍏🍇 POPSICLE or FROZEN YOGURT”

image18

Say no to chilled water!

Everyone craves for a chilled glass of water💧 to beat the scorching heat☀️😫.
Does  your first ritual after coming back home 🏡involves running 🏃🏼‍♀️ to  the refrigerator and grabbing a bottle of chilled water? With the rising  temperature 🌡everyday we feel necessary to drink chilled water as  often as possible.
What happens when you drink cold water?
- When you drink cold beverages your blood vessels shrink, your digestion becomes restricted and hydration is hindered.
-  When you drink cold water❄️, energy is utilised to regulate your body  temperature which instead should be used to digest food and absorb  nutrients. So it leads to energy wastage.
- Drinking cold water after  a meal 🍱creates excess mucus in your body, which can lead to decrease  in immune system function, making it easier to catch cold and  infections🤧😪.
“You probably know that warm water opens your pores  and makes your skin 💆🏻‍♀️feel looser, while cold water closes your  pores and constricts your skin. Guess what? Drinking cold water does the  same thing to your digestive tract!”. So basically, COLD WATER❄️ can  obstruct digestion!

image19

Summer heat & exercise can be a risky combination!

Watch out before you step out for Exercise🚴🏻‍♂⛹🏻‍♀this summer!

Avoid working out when the heat is at its peak☀ typically between 10:00am-4:00pm.
Generally, early morning is the best time to workout, especially if it’s going to be scorcher that day.
When it’s hot outside you can jump in a pool, or go for aqua aerobics, aqua zumba class.
Certain pointers you should keep in mind while exercising during summers-
1. Hydrate yourself pre workout, during the workout and post workout adequately💧
2. Carry a fan/spray bottle for skin surface cooling.
3. Wear light/coloured, light weight clothing👕👚. This will allow more air circulation over your skin and keep you cool.
4. Be sure to apply sunblock cream.
5. Stop immediately if you’re feeling dizzy, faint or nauseous.

image20

Celebrate your summer with the taste of fresh fruits!

As the temperature is rising🌡, it’s getting  hotter☀️, days are getting longer, and a must add on are FRESH FRUITS 🍈  that can help you survive and thrive!🍇
Seasonal fruits are usually fresher, tastier and more nutritious.🍉🍌😋
Summer fruits give you energy, helps you to cool down, stay hydrated💧and gives the important nutrients that your body needs.
Not  to mention, fruit is naturally sweet with no added sugar and oh so  delicious. you can enjoy it on its own or in a smoothie, salad🥗, or  another dish.

image21

Hydrate Feel Great!

As the temperature rises  this summer, you will need to pay close attention to one of the most  important aspect of your health, YOUR HYDRATION.
Water is the most  essential nutrient needed by the body. It is a part of every cell,  tissue and organ. Loss of 10% of water is serious and 20% may lead to  death. Water we consume regulates body temperature, helps is digestion,  protects body organs, and performs other important functions essential  for survival.
So it is very important for you to drink enough water  this summer to stay hydrated. As with increased temperature during  summers, we sweat more leading to increased water loss so you need to  drink enough water to prevent dehydration.

The Fat Cell Theory

The answer to these questions lies in the fat cell theory!

Lets find out about this theory.

The amount of fat in a person's body is a reflection of both the number and the size of the fat cells. The number of fat cells increases most rapidly during the growing years of late childhood and early puberty. It should be no surprise that our most important physiological developments happens during these years. Fat cells/adipocytes proliferate in three stages : in the first two years of life; when the child is about 7 years old and and during adolescence.

When the child eats too much his or her fat cells swell up until they are filled to complete capacity. When these fat cells have grown to their complete size and cannot hold more; this is when there is production of new fat cells. A high number of fat cells is known as "Hyperplastic Obesity". When this child with an increased number of fat cells reduces weight before he is fully grown the number of fat cells does not reduce, it is only the size of the fat cell that reduces but he is stuck with the extra fat cells and thus a greater capacity to store fat forever.

  • The size of the fat cell dwindles, but not the number.
  • People with extra fat cells tend to regain the lost weight rapidly.
  • In contrast, people with an average number of enlarged fat cells may be more successful in maintaining the weight loss.

Prevention of obesity is very important during the growing years because once you have accumulated those extra fat cells in your body you may not be able to lose that ever. So it is important  for the children and adolescents to have an ideal body weight to keep the fat cell theory accurate and to prevent the problem for the lifetime.

WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAU EFFECT

As most individuals who follow a diet regimen after a certain point do not see any changes in their body weight, as they have reached a plateau where they are now confused and in stress that even after following a balanced diet and exercising regularly they are unable to reduce more of their body weight and it is stagnant.

Here is the solution to most of the questions of the individuals.

It's called the Plateau Effect- the inability to lose weight is known as a weight loss plateau or stall, and it can be frustrating and discouraging.

To cut down down on this Plateau effect there are certain changes which needs to be brought about like changes in the diet, exercise, protein intake of the individual, sleep pattern, stress management and water intake.

  • The diet of the person should include more fibre rich foods like whole fruits, whole grains, mainly including soluble fibre (oatbran, nuts, citrus fruits, apple, barley) which will require more water consumption for its digestion, which will help in breaking the weight loss plateau.

Fibre promotes weight loss by slowing the movement of food through your digestive tract, decreasing appetite and reducing the number of calories your body absorbs from food.

  • Including more protein in the diet, and less carbohydrate rich foods specially refined and processed foods should be restricted. Increasing Protein intake like milk and milk products, lean meat like chicken, egg should be included in the diet.

Moreover, maintaining a high protein intake can help protect against the loss of muscle mass and a drop in metabolic rate, both of which typically occur during weight loss. Please consult a dietitian before you decide on how much protein you should take according to your ideal body weight as protein overload may also have adverse effects.

  •  Sometimes, it may seem as though you're not eating that much, yet you still have difficulty losing weight. Its very Important that you record what you are eating as unknowingly you may eat a lot more calories than required. Hence you can maintain a food dairy to record your daily food intake with the quantity’s you are consuming or use any nutrient calculating app to maintain a record of what is your daily calorie intake.
  • Its very important to keep changing your exercise intensity and the exercise pattern as this may also be the factor which is causing the weight loss plateau.

Increasing the intensity of the weight training and the pattern of exercises which you are following is very important to again reboost your metabolic rate and to reverse the weight loss plateau effect.

  • Stress can often put the brakes on weight loss. It may seem as though you have little control over the stress in your life, but research has shown that learning to manage stress can help promote weight loss.
  • Insufficient sleep can interfere with weight loss by reducing your metabolic rate and shifting your hormone levels to promote hunger and fat storage. To support weight loss and overall health, aim for 7–8 hours of sleep per night.

These are simple guidelines for breaking ones weight loss plateau, and you are still unable to achieve your target weight we are there to support and guide. Connect with Nutridiction for expert advice by Dietitians.

Superfood QUINOA

Globalisation and Urbanisation have brought a lot of changes in the dietary and lifestyle behaviours among population groups throughout the world. Traditional food patterns rich in complex carbohydrates, micronutrients, fibre and phytochemicals are being replaced with diets which are rich in animal fats, refined carbohydrates and oils, a situation that has made a direct impact on the prevalence of certain chronic diseases. Thus this situation has made many researchers to analyse food or food components that can be more healthy for human consumption. One of it is Quinoa.

QUINOA

Quinoa is considered by most to be high in the ranks of "Superfoods" as it is a complete source of protein, containing all nine essential amino acids. According to FAO and WHO quinoa fulfills the amino acid requirement for adults- 180% of histidine, 274% of isoleucine, 338% of lysine, 212% of methionine+cysteine, 320% of phenylalanine+tyrosine, 331% of threonine, 228% of tryptophan and 323% of valine. But there is even more to quinoa than protein. The chenopodium quinoa seed is a rich source of phytochemicals that boosts human health. Quinoa also contains a lot of vitamins and minerals, unsaturated fatty acids, a low glycemic index and is gluten-free  by nature. Quinoa is an excellent source of dietary fibre, about 78% of it's fibre content is insoluble and 22% soluble.

A study showed that quinoa consumption slows down the aging process and improves metabolic health by improving factors like lifespan and locomotory performance and decreasing negative factors such as AGE pigment and lipid accumulation. Quinoa is considered one of the best vegetarian protein source, as it's protein levels are similar to those found in milk and higher than those present in cereals such as wheat, rice and maize. Quinoa has also been used by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) due it's versatility in meeting the needs of humans during space missions.

For these reasons Quinoa could represent a valuable source of nutrition and can used in nutritious food and beverages.

Quinoa is easy to cook and has versatility in preparation. You can try several recipes using Quinoa like Quinoa salad, Quinoa porridge, Quinoa risotto, etc.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Can drinking apple cider vinegar help someone lose weight?

The answer might be yes, but it is not proven.

Apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting the sugar from apples. This turns them into acetic acid, which is the active ingredient in vinegar.

To the recent Health claims of reducing belly fat, lowering cholesterol and reducing blood sugar levels are very small studies and requires more research to prove such claims more strongly with scientific proofs.

The main substance in vinegar, acetic acid can kill many types of harmful bacteria or prevent them from multiplying in our body.

Many Research studies have been conducted on how apple cider vinegar can help in reducing body fat but requires more research work in recent years. A study in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry found that mice who were given acetic acid were less likely to gain body fat.The mice that were given the acetic acid had higher energy expenditure, oxygen intake, and burned more fat for energy than those given just water. The authors state that this suggests acetic acid could help suppress body fat buildup.

Feeling full

A study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition looked at how glucose, insulin, and feelings of fullness were different in those who consumed acetic acid versus those who did not.Twelve people were given three different levels of vinegar with acetic acid after eating a portion of white bread. Another group was given bread with no vinegar. The authors found that the people who received the highest dose of acetic acid had lower blood sugar and insulin after eating the bread than the other groups. They also found that the higher the dose of acetic acid, the fuller the participants felt.

Dosage- 1 to 2 tsp can be taken but the most important fact to be noted is that subtracting single foods or ingredients rarely has a noticeable effect on weight. It’s the entire diet and lifestyle modification that counts to bring about any change in weight and blood sugar levels. Standardization and development of probiotic enriched curd

RESEARCH TOPIC: Standardization and development of probiotic enriched curd and study it's effect on subjects with hypertension.

AUTHORS: Sonal Dhanuka, Prerana Solanki, Pallavi G. Shettigar

AIM: The aim of the study was to standardize and develop a probiotic rich curd (using lactobacillus helveticus) and to study its effect on subjects with hypertension.

OBJECTIVES: 1. Standardization and development of probiotic enriched curd. 2. Sensory evaluation to be conducted for the products developed and evaluating any significant reduction in the systolic and diastolic blood pressure using probiotic enriched curd.

METHODOLOGY: The study involved two groups test group and the control group (14 in each group). The test group was given 100ml of curd fermented with lactobacillus helveticus and the control group was given 100ml of standard curd fermented using standard starter culture for a period of 45 days. Every 7th day the blood pressure readings were taken for both the groups and a daily subject evaluation form was filled to check the acceptability of the curd. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Paired sample t-test, repeated measures, independent sample t-test and binary logistic regression were used for analyzing the data(using SPSS version 16).

RESULTS: There was a decline in the mean value of systolic and diastolic blood pressure towards the end of the intervention period in case of test group. Although, statistically there was no significant difference in the systolic blood pressure of test and control group but a significant difference in diastolic blood pressure was seen, a significant decline in diastolic blood pressure was seen in case of test group which can be attributed to the probiotic enriched curd given during the intervention period.

CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that lactobacillus helveticus can play a very important role in the reduction of blood pressure in hypertensive subjects. This probiotic enriched curd can be used by dairy industries, as curd being a part of daily diet can help the hypertensive subjects to have a better control over hypertension.
